This inspiring collection of think pieces by key figures in academia, the Holy See and FAO covers a range of pressing issues affecting people in the fisheries sector, from modern slavery and exploitation to the effects of increasing global demand for fish and the situation of migrant fishers. Practices such as human trafficking, forced labour and illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing not only threaten the sector's activities, but also the lives and livelihoods of the millions of people that depend on it. Rising to these challenges will contribute to ending hunger and extreme poverty, as the fishing sector ensures nutrition and income to millions of people. These contributions were first shared on the occasion of World Fisheries Day 2016 at FAO, where FAO and the Holy See jointly denounced injustices in the fisheries sector and called for their eradication.
