Chants D’un Amant Syrien / Songs of a Syrian Lover

Clinton Scollard (1860-1932) made several trips to the Levant that inspired both his prose poetic works. The book Songs of a Syrian Lover (1912) reveals his interest for the East and belongs specifically to the movement of English Rub iy t: the Quatrains of Omar Khayyam became very popular thanks to Edward FitzGerald's translation and influenced many authors. But far from bacchanalian songs, Scollard poems are closer to the Song of Songs with the celebration of the beloved woman and the passion for her. The English text in this edition is accompanied by a double translation, one in French by Maryse Salmon and Olivier Salmon, and the other in Arabic by Hussein I.
