Classical Readings in African Library Development

The library climate in Africa has changed in a major way since the 1970s. While library and information services on the African continent have grown considerably, they face substantial difficulties. Given that the economies of most African countries have been devastated by corruption, graft, and heavy debt burdens, most libraries are unable to purchase basic materials from traditional sources in Europe and the United States. The history of library movement, growth, development, and problems is being told in a significant body of emerging literature. This book unites major periodical articles, written mostly by Africans, through notable discussions on the subject of information services in Africa. Beginning with a bibliographic essay, the work retraces the literature of public library development in East and West Africa. Included are the historical contributions and writings of Harold Lancour, F.A. Sharr, and John Harris, three men that helped to positively shape the library world in Africa. Literature on library associations that have significantly influenced professional development in Africa is included as well as articles discussing the organization of knowledge and automation.
