Sugar Lee was born to a pair of Wild West rodeo show performers who later became regulars with a traveling circus. It made for an interesting time growing up, to put it mildly. At three years old she was on stage having bits of paper the size of cigarettes snapped out of her fingers by her mother’s sixteen foot leather bullwhip. Since someone decided it would be useful for her to know how to read and write, she ended up at Catholic boarding school. It was an equitable trade - the nuns gave her literacy, and she gave them heartburn with her rebellious ways. During the summer months she traveled with the circuses and rodeos, performing at the various shows with her parents. During the years with the circus she became known as ’Sno Cone Annie’, and was lucky to count all kinds of special people as her friends, including Gorilla Girl, Caterpillar Man, Alligator Boy, Pin Head and many other denizens from the carnival boardwalk.
